Psychological hedonism cannot be true because we will not always pursue what will bring us the most pleasure. Nozick proposes an experience machine mirroring our own experience where we can live the life with the most pleasure. In class, we saw that the majority of people would not plug into the machine. Due to this outcome it must be true that psychological hedonism cannot be true. There are other factors driving actions other than just pleasure. The desire for truth is extremely important to humans, even if the fabricated life brought greater pleasures. While it is possible we would never know the experience machine is a lower form of life, but i don’t think these programs could produce the art, the novels, the film, that our world has been able to create. Some of these forms bring the highest pleasures and in the machine it is impossible to program advances and innovations in these fields. Advances are restricted in the machine. It restricts us from higher pleasures, advances. It is also impossible to perfectly replicate relationships, one of the greatest pleasures, leading to the conclusion that the experience machine may not bring the greatest pleasures.
