According to Regan, both humans and non-human animals have the consciousness of what they do, feel, and want. Living creatures are experiencing subjects of a life that they should be responsible for what they’ve done, and they have the right to make choices. However, only humans have inherent value because humans are the “dominance” of the world who contribute a lot. Not only can they manage themselves to avoid doing the wrong things, but they can use their knowledge and learning to make more efforts, such as protecting the environment from destruction and pollution, developing varied kinds of systems, and saving all creatures’ lives. There’s a great deal of things that humans can do which makes our society better, and these are just the tip of the iceberg. When we consider the non-human animals, the similarity is that both humans and animals need to be taught after they were born. For humans, what they need is to be “educated”, but for animals, they need to be “domesticated.” The reason why there’s a difference is because humans, basically, have advanced linguistic function and learning system. Also, it’s irrefutable that human is the most intelligent living beings on this earth. Thus, humans have inherent value.
